Open Source Doom engine allows fans to create own versions.

The decision to make the graphic engine of Doom open source was made by idSoftware in order to give Doom enthusiasts the opportunity to create their own versions of the game. However, it is important to note that only the graphic engine itself is free, not the game content. In order to play the game, players need a file called IWAD, which contains music, graphics, sounds, enemies, weapons, and more. This version of Doom utilizes OpenGL technology to enhance the graphics, generating particle effects, models, and high-quality textures that surpass the original game. It can be played using Risen3D, as the two are compatible with each other. Risen3D acts as the graphic engine that supports the capabilities of FreeDoom and similar games. Additionally, players have the ability to customize various aspects of the game such as mode, resolution, 3D sound, filters, skill level, and more.
